There are also a lot of slavic loanwords, mainly russian and polish loanwords in german language as well, so it is a very important tool for slavic peoples like russians to learn of course, russian will keep an important role but the growth of german will be undeniable.. I've heard that russian is a much harder language to learn and not as widely spoken in europe than german is. tbh i am more interested in learning russian than german but since german is closer to english, i might just do that.. German is a much easier language to learn, for one thing. especially since english is a germanic language, it will be much easier to pick up, you just have to basically learn new words and how to conjugate verbs. also, german is much more popular throughout europe than russian..
Russian still leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of many in central and eastern europe, but many will speak it (my german friends from saxony and saxony-anhalt started learning russian before english).. I am tossing up between learning russian or german first. i want to learn german so i can talk to my friend in german but i would also like to learn russian as my family is from russia.. Usefulness. if you want to learn a language with a large number of speakers and which is spoken in many countries, the ones to choose in order of 'usefulness' are: english, french, spanish, russian, arabic, chinese (mandarin), german, japanese, portuguese and hindi/urdu..
